The majority of the wood in The Dam House was milled locally and each type has a history. The wide pine paneling and clear trim comes from a single white pine blow-down. The kitchen cabinets are made from apple wood from a nearby orchard planted in 1947; Spalted maple counter tops come from the dead maple next to the barn; Local cherry is used in the master bedroom suite for furniture and cabinets. The original wide-pine floors remain where they were laid 150 years ago, while a new tiger maple floor enriches the great room. Top-of-the-line, built-in appliances and Brazilian granite compliment the apple cabinetry in the kitchen. A desk nook provides plenty of shelving for cookbooks and a generous pantry and large broom closet are designed to support the kitchen. The dining area and its large bay window overlooking a seasonal view of the lake, and a living room, complete the "great room". The original Glenwood wood-burning cook stove and the 40' porch overlooking the river are gentle reminders of the earlier life of the house. The original living and dining space on the first floor were reconfigured to include a powder room and a fully paneled library, complete with built-in bookshelves and a wood stove. The library opens onto the downstairs porch. |
